Description
One of the most revered Hanuman temples in India, founded by the poet-saint Tulsidas in the 16th century. The temple is famous for its resident monkeys, the divine besan ladoo prasad, and the annual Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh — a classical music festival running since 1928. The temple's serene gardens and ancient banyan trees create a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling city streets.
Aarti Schedule
History
Founded by Goswami Tulsidas, the author of Ramcharitmanas, in the 16th century. He reportedly discovered the idol of Hanuman at this very spot. The temple was renovated in the early 20th century by Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University. The Sangeet Samaroh was started by Pt. Samta Prasad in 1928 and has hosted legends like Ravi Shankar and Bismillah Khan. The temple complex also includes a library with rare manuscripts of the Ramcharitmanas.
Significance
Sankat Mochan means the remover of troubles. It is believed that Hanuman here specifically protects devotees from evil spirits and negative energies. The temple is also one of the four main temples to visit on a Varanasi pilgrimage, alongside Kashi Vishwanath, Annapurna, and Durga.
