About BHU
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was founded in 1916 by Annie Besant and Madan Mohan Malaviya. It is one of the largest residential universities in Asia, spread across 1,300 acres with over 30,000 students. The campus is a self-contained city with temples, museums, gardens, faculty houses, and student hostels.
The university is home to the prestigious Faculty of Sanskrit, Faculty of Arts, Institute of Technology (IIT BHU), Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS BHU), and Faculty of Performing Arts. The campus architecture blends colonial and traditional Hindu styles, making it a visual treat for visitors.
New Vishwanath Temple
250-foot tall marble temple, one of the tallest in India. Built by the Birla family in 1966. Stunning architecture with a blend of modern and traditional styles.
BHU Museum (Bharat Kala Bhawan)
Premier art and archaeology museum with rare sculptures, paintings, and artifacts dating back to the 1st century AD. A must-visit for history lovers.
Central Library
One of the largest library buildings in Asia with over 1.5 million books and manuscripts. Beautiful architecture with a serene reading atmosphere.
Campus Gardens
Beautifully maintained gardens including the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Herbal Garden. Perfect for morning walks and peaceful retreats.
How to Reach
Auto-Rickshaw / E-Rickshaw
₹30-50 from Varanasi Junction, 20 minutes. Most convenient option.
City Bus
Bus routes 2, 5, and 12 pass through BHU. Very affordable at ₹5-10.
Taxi / Cab
Ola/Uber available. ₹100-150 from the railway station.
Visitor Tips
1. Carry a valid ID proof — required for security check at the main gate.
2. Best time to visit: Early morning (6-9 AM) or evening (4-6 PM) when the campus is beautiful in golden light.
3. Wear comfortable shoes — the campus is huge (1,300 acres) and involves a lot of walking.
4. Photography is allowed in most areas but restricted inside some buildings.
5. The campus canteen serves excellent and affordable food — try the famous BHU lassi.
