Why It Exists
The Story Behind the Fire
Dashashwamedh means “the ghat where Brahma sacrificed ten horses.” Lord Brahma performed the Dasha-Ashwamedha yajna here to welcome Shiva back to Kashi. That is why this ghat — not the other 83 — became the ceremonial centre of Varanasi. Every road, every lane reference, every first-time conversation ends with “at Dashashwamedh.”
The ghat has been rebuilt after Mughal-era destruction by the Marathas under Peshwa rule in the 18th century and by Kashi Naresh. But the fire ritual never stopped — 365 days, no exception, for centuries. Today 5-7 priests (Shri Ganga Seva Nidhi) perform the 45-minute choreography with 15kg brass lamps, conch, bells, incense, flowers, chamars (yak-tail) and peacock fans — the five elements: fire, water, earth, air, ether.

The Ritual, Decoded
8 Steps of the 7-Priest Choreography
Each element represents the five tattvas. Watch for the arcs — wide → tight → wide. Months of rehearsal make 7 priests move as one.
Priests in saffron/cream arrive, arrange 2kg brass lamps, incense, marigold, conch. Crowd murmurs, boatmen anchor. Air already thick with incense. Find your spot NOW — last 15 min gridlock.
A single deep conch shell — so loud it vibrates your chest — signals start. Crowd falls silent. Temple bells start slow, then faster. Boats stop rowing.
Large incense burners swung in figure-8. Camphor smoke clouds rise. Flower petals showered toward Ganga. First chant: "Om Jai Gange Mata".
7 priests lift 3-tier brass lamps (each ~15kg) with 5 flames — fire element. Synchronised clockwise arcs, then counter-clockwise. Flames reflected on water = the iconic photo. This is the peak.
Yak-tail chamars and peacock fans swung — representing air & ether (fifth element). Choreography mirrors lamps but slower, graceful. Bells + drums + chanting peak.
All 5 elements offered: fire (lamp), water (Gangajal), earth (flowers), air (fan), ether (chamar). 7 priests move as one — months of rehearsal. Drumbeat doubles.

2026: Nov 24 (Tue), Kartik Purnima. All 84 ghats lit simultaneously with 17 lakh mustard-oil diyas. Dashashwamedh aarti extends to 60 min, ghats glow like stars from boat. The single most crowded + most beautiful night. VP inaugurated Namo Ghat on this night.

Fix: Shoe lockers are near temple corridor, not at ghat. No one should take your shoes at aarti steps.
