Description
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the most sacred temple in Varanasi. The golden spire, donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839, rises above the ancient city skyline. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, opened in 2021, connects the temple directly to the Ganga at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Aarti Schedule
History
Built by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780 on the site of an ancient temple destroyed during Mughal invasions. The iconic golden spire and dome were donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab in 1839. The temple underwent a massive transformation with the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2021, creating a grand 500-meter pathway from the ghat to the sanctum. The corridor project also included the renovation of over 40 ancient buildings and the creation of a world-class visitor center.
Significance
As one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, it is believed that a single darshan here grants moksha (liberation). The temple marks the spot where Shiva revealed himself as a column of light. The Ganga flows just 100 meters away, making it the holiest intersection of river and temple in all of Hinduism.
Dress Code
Modest traditional attire. No shorts, sleeveless tops, or revealing clothing. Mobile phones, cameras, and leather items are prohibited inside.

Best Time to Visit
October to March offers the most pleasant weather. Visit during Mangla Aarti (3:00 AM) for a deeply spiritual experience with fewer crowds. Monsoon (July-September) brings fewer tourists but occasional flooding near ghats. Summers (April-June) can reach 45°C — avoid midday visits.
