Varanasi Gullies (Galis)

The most famous lane in Varanasi — a 300-year-old artery that grew around Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Rebuilt as the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Dec 2021, it now connects Godowlia to the temple with widened stone paths, LED lighting and dedicated gates (1-4).

The legendary breakfast lane near Manikarnika — famous for badi kachori-sabzi + jalebi since 1888. Over a dozen shops, each with secret masala blends. Sold out daily by 10 AM.

Centuries-old coppersmith lane — 200+ workshops hammering brass/copper utensils. The "Thathera" community (GI-tagged brassware) still uses traditional hand-hammering. Also morning kachori hub.

House-Anushasanamsya The lane with no name boards — only the longest local queue tells you where the best kachori is. Unmarked stalls 07:00-09:30, cheapest in old city (₹25). Locals-only breakfast.

The beating commercial heart — where Chowk, Lanka, Sigra and Cantt roads meet. The default drop point for all vehicles; pedestrian-only 09:00-21:00. Central hub for markets, street food and ghat access.

The oldest inhabited part of Varanasi — a labyrinth of 2-5m lanes, 200-year-old havelis with carved wooden balconies, silk wholesale, launglata sweets, and living Banarasi culture unchanged for centuries.

The direct approach from Godowlia to Dashashwamedh Ghat — the main Ganga Aarti venue. Stalls for puja items, chai, chaat line both sides. Gridlock 17:00-20:00 before Aarti.

Silk dyeing sub-lane of Chowk — red water channels, yarns hanging to dry. Connects Chowk wholesale to Vishwanath retail. Rangrez community since Mughal era.

The backpacker/digital nomad capital — 500m of cafes, hostels, yoga studios, BHU student vibe behind Assi Ghat. Widest lanes in ghat zone, murals by BHU Fine Arts students, rooftop cafes with Ganga view.

The historic Ansari weaving quarter — where authentic Banarasi silk is still woven on pit looms. "Looms sing at night." 15-30 days per saree, real zari. Workshop visits ₹500-1000 with chai. GI-tagged brocade.

The music lane — where sitars, tablas and harmoniums are made by hereditary artisans. International Music Centre Ashram (1975) hosts Wed/Sat concerts. Ravi Shankar, Bismillah Khan lineage.

The crowd-averse boarding point — 800m south of Assi, 7-min walk from Pandey Haveli Road. Peaceful, no queues. Cruise north to Dashashwamedh for Aarti, return.

Heritage haveli lane to Shivala Ghat — restored havelis, boutique stays, quieter approach. Part of Assi backstreets cluster but distinct ghat link.

BHU student corridor — Pappu Chaiwala, Chachi Ki Kachori (since 1950s), Malai Toast stalls. Connects BHU to Assi. Cycle-friendly, young vibe.

Varanasi's newest riverfront (85th ghat, opened Nov 2023-24) — 1.5 km modern stretch with helipad, floating jetty, ramps (wheelchair friendly), parking, food court, open-air theatre. Only ghat where you drive right to the river. ₹76 crore, 21,000 sqm.

GI-tagged wooden lacquerware toys — jointless, bright lacquer, squirrel-hair brush lines. 1,500 families, Kunder Kharadi Samaj. Lathe ("kharad") operated by "kunder". Kashmiriganj + Khojwa are the twin centres. B 25/33-85, Jawahar Nagar, Bhelupur.
