Description
A striking Shakti Peeth temple painted in vivid red, built in the 18th century by Rani Bhabani of Natore, Bengal. The temple houses a self-manifested (swayambhu) idol of Goddess Durga. Adjacent to the temple is the sacred Durga Kund (pond), from which the temple gets its name. Often called the Monkey Temple due to its large monkey population. The temple's distinctive Nagara-style architecture with its towering shikhara is a visual landmark visible from across the neighborhood.
Aarti Schedule
History
Built in the 18th century by Rani Bhabani of Natore (Bengal), who was a devotee of Goddess Durga. The temple was constructed using the Nagara style of architecture, characterized by its curvilinear shikhara. The adjacent Durga Kund was also built by Rani Bhabani for devotees to bathe before worship. The temple was renovated several times, with significant restoration work done in the early 20th century by local charitable trusts.
Significance
One of the 51 Shakti Peeths where parts of Sati's body are believed to have fallen. The swayambhu idol makes it especially sacred. The adjacent Durga Kund is considered as holy as the Ganga for ritual bathing. Only Hindus are permitted inside the inner sanctum.

Best Time to Visit
October to March offers the most pleasant weather. Visit during Mangla Aarti (3:00 AM) for a deeply spiritual experience with fewer crowds. Monsoon (July-September) brings fewer tourists but occasional flooding near ghats. Summers (April-June) can reach 45°C — avoid midday visits.
