History
The temple dates back to ancient times. The silver-faced idol with garland of skulls represents Kaal Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. The temple is unique for its offerings — devotees offer alcohol and sesame oil, which are accepted by the deity. According to legend, Kaal Bhairav was created by Shiva to guard the city and punish those who violate dharma in Kashi.

Kaal Bhairav is the Kotwal (police chief) of Kashi. It is believed that no one can stay in or leave Varanasi without his permission. The black thread given here is worn for protection from evil and negative energies.
