History of Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple has a history spanning over 3,500 years, making it one of the oldest continuously worshipped religious sites in the world. The original temple is believed to have been built during the time of the ancient Kashi Kings, and references to it appear in sacred texts including the Skanda Purana and Kashi Khanda.
The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times throughout history. In 1194 CE, Qutb-ud-din Aibak's forces destroyed the original structure. It was rebuilt by the Delhi Sultanate, only to be destroyed again by Sikandar Lodi in 1496. The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb ordered its destruction in 1669 and built the Gyanvapi Mosque on the site.
The current temple structure was built by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780. The Maratha rulerMahadji Shinde donated gold to cover the temple dome, which now weighs approximately 1,000 kilograms. The temple stands 51 feet tall and its gold-plated dome can be seen from various parts of the city.
In recent years, the temple has undergone a massive transformation with the construction of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, connecting the temple directly to the Ganges ghats. This project, inaugurated in 2021, has transformed the entire temple precinct and made darshan more accessible for millions of devotees.
The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor (Dham)
The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, also known as Kashi Vishwanath Dham, is a grand project that connects the Kashi Vishwanath Temple directly to the Ganges ghats. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 13, 2021, this 500,000 square feet complex has transformed the pilgrim experience.
Before the corridor, devotees had to navigate through a labyrinth of narrow lanes to reach the temple from the ghats. The corridor has replaced these congested passages with a wide, clean, and beautifully designed pathway featuring traditional Kashi architecture, manicured gardens, and cultural installations.
