Varanasi runs on its own clock, and so does its transport. Within the old city everything is steps, alleyways and boats; the rest of the town moves by e-rickshaw, auto and taxi. With a few fixed numbers in your pocket you can travel comfortably and avoid the tourist price tag. Two rules cover most of it – always take the prepaid counter where one exists, and always agree a price before you sit.
Arriving by air
Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport sits about 25 km from the ghats, a 40–60 minute ride. The prepaid taxi counter inside the terminal prints the fare on a ticket – sedan ₹900–1,400, SUV ₹1,300–2,500, and a tempo about ₹2,500 for the whole group with luggage. That slip is your shield against any later surcharge.
For night flights, arrange a hotel transfer in advance and stick to the prepaid counter otherwise. App-based taxis exist but surge after 11 PM – compare before booking.

Varanasi Cant (BSB)

When boats get expensive
The no-vehicle old town
Past the corridor gates around Kashi Vishwanath the lanes are pedestrian-only, and the Vishwanath Gali funnels crowds on foot for about 1.5 km. Even autorickshaws stop at the barrier; the walk to the temple is part of the experience, usually 10–20 minutes.
Plan routes so the walking comes between boat and temple, not with luggage after a long train. If mobility is a concern, pick a hotel near the corridor edge or on the ghats where boats and rickshaws reach the door.
Getting around at aarti time
The evening Ganga aarti on Dashashwamedh Ghat runs about 45 minutes – 6 PM October–March, 7 PM April–September. Roads around the ghat close to vehicles an hour before, so start walking early or take the boat.
After aarti, autos pick up on the main road, not at the ghat steps. Head to Godowlia or the parking lane and take the prepaid counter; the last surge of the day hits here.
