The ghats hold you first, but Varanasi sits at the centre of a ring of one-day treasures: the deer park where the Buddha first taught, the riverside fort of Ramnagar, the marble campus of BHU with its own Vishwanath, and the goddess town of Vindhyachal beyond. Each trip asks for a few hours and returns you to the ghats by evening — and the ghats in that return light are better than any itinerary.
Sarnath: where the Buddha spoke
About ten kilometres north of the ghats lies the Deer Park of Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon. The great Dhamek Stupa rises 43 metres over the site, the Ashoka pillar and its lion capital are preserved in the museum, and temples of the Thai, Tibetan and Sri Lankan traditions keep the lawns gently alive. It is the calmest and most important half-day near the city.
The museum is open from 9 AM to 5 PM and closed on Fridays; entry is ₹5 (Indian) and ₹100 (foreigner) — a combined site and museum ticket is ₹20 and ₹250. Photography is not allowed inside the galleries. Allow a relaxed two to three hours; the whole site closes at sunset.

Ramnagar Fort: the royal bank across the river
On the opposite bank stands the 18th-century fort of the Maharaja of Banaras. Marble Durbar Hall, vintage coaches, antique weaponry and faded period frescoes crowd its museum rooms, while the Saraswati Bhawan library inside holds rare manuscripts. In autumn the fort becomes the stage of the month-long Ramnagar Ramlila.
Open 10:00 to 4:30 PM in winter, 10:00 to 5:00 PM in summer; entry ₹50-75 for Indians, ₹200 for foreign visitors. A boat across the river (about ₹400 and the prettiest approach) or a bridge drive both work; in monsoon the ferry is the only sane way.
The BHU circuit
The university campus holds two quick treasures: the New Vishwanath Temple in pure white marble, and the Bharat Mata Temple with its floor-relief map of India. Both cheap (Bharat Mata is free, 9:30 AM to 8 PM), both walkable, and BHU cafeterias turn the trip into a lunch stop. A soft half-day for temple-weary legs.

Vindhyachal: the far goddess town
About ninety kilometres south-west, Vindhyachal guards one of the most important temples of the goddess in northern India — the Vindhyavasini shrine, beloved by devotees who come by the busload from Bengal, Odisha, and the north. A private car makes it a full, rewarding day: 3-4 hours each way, the darshan, the river, and the old bazaar along.
Friday is the biggest day at Vindhyavasini; float like a pilgrim if you can start by 6 AM. The town runs on the goddess — chai, prasad and lodging all price themselves for her crowd.
Prayagraj and Ayodhya: long by design
