Location & Topography
Varanasi is situated in eastern Uttar Pradesh on the left bank of the Ganges River. The city lies in the heart of the Indo-Gangetic Plain, one of the most fertile and densely populated regions on Earth. The terrain is predominantly flat alluvial plains with an average elevation of 80.71 meters (265 feet) above sea level.
The Ganges flows from south to north through the city, creating the famous ghats — a series of stepped embankments leading to the water. The Varuna River flows through the northern part, while the Asi River marks the southern boundary. These rivers give the city its name: Varanasi (Varuna + Asi).

Heavy rainfall with temperatures from 25°C to 35°C. Roads can be waterlogged. The Ganges rises significantly. Not ideal for sightseeing but the city looks lush and green.
