About Ramnagar Fort
Ramnagar Fort is a stunning Mughal-style fortress built in 1750 by Kashi Naresh (the King of Varanasi) Balwant Singh. Located on the eastern bank of the River Ganges, directly across from the Varanasi ghats, the fort stands as a magnificent testament to the region's royal heritage. Constructed with red sandstone, the fort blends Mughal and Indian architectural styles, featuring ornate balconies, towers, and elegant courtyards.
The fort has been the ancestral residence of the Kashi Naresh — the royal family of Varanasi — for over 275 years. Unlike most Indian forts that are government-owned, Ramnagar Fort remains a living palace, still owned and maintained by the royal family. This gives it a unique character, with parts of the fort still used for royal functions and ceremonies.
Today, the fort houses a fascinating museum that showcases the royal collection of vintage cars, Mughal weapons, antique clocks, ornate palanquins, and priceless artifacts. The fort grounds also include several temples and the legendary Ram Leela grounds, where the annual Ram Leela festival has been performed for over two centuries under the patronage of the Kashi Naresh.
