About BHU Campus
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is one of the oldest and largest residential universities in Asia. Founded in 1916 by Annie Besant and Madan Mohan Malaviya, it was envisioned as a center of learning that would combine modern education with ancient Indian traditions. The campus spreads across 1300+ acres, making it one of the largest university campuses in the world.
Today, BHU houses over 30,000 students across 14 faculties and more than 130 departments. The campus is a self-contained city with temples, museums, libraries, hospitals, sports complexes, and residential quarters. The iconic New Vishwanath Temple (Birla Mandir), standing 155 feet tall, is the 7th tallest temple in India and a major landmark visible from across Varanasi.
Beyond academics, BHU is known for its rich cultural heritage. The Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum houses rare sculptures and Lord Buddha's relics. The Old Vishwanath Temple within the campus predates the famous Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. The entire campus is dotted with colonial-era buildings, lush gardens, and tree-lined avenues that make it a paradise for walkers and cyclists.
